  5. Hands-On with the Panerai Luminor

Panerai is a brand that you hear about a bit less than the biggest companies in the watch world, but they deserve to be in the same discussion as those larger names. One reason why might be the fact that they only have a few collections. This is not a brand that has hit a home run on numerous models, but instead is one with a bread and butter product that they sell incredibly well. Regardless of how big or small their name is, nobody argues with the fact that their Panerai Luminor collection is highly sought after. Brand Founder Giovanni Panerai was a watchmaking expert, and he spread his knowledge to the community by opening a workshop and school. He established that facility all the way back in 1860, making this brand one of the oldest in the world. His initial success came from a model called the Radiomir, which impressed the horology world with its especially luminescent dial. As time went on, Panerai began supplying the navy with a large number of watches, while also seeing tremendous success in the commercial world. The brand really took off when they expanded their catalog in the 90s, and they continue to impress watch enthusiasts to this day. History of the Luminor As I explained above, the Radiomir was Panerai’s first big hit. The Luminor came much later, but it was based on a specific Radiomir model from the 50s. That timepiece had the signature flat bezel, wide case, and unique crown that you see on Luminor models today. As time passes, Panerai continues to improve this iconic piece more and more. An in-house movement and better materials are two of those innovations. Appearance The most attractive part of wearing a Panerai Luminor is its appearance. It is wide, bulky, and distinctly masculine, which are traits that many people absolutely love. I also enjoy how distinct the crown is. As you can see, it is a disc enclosed by metal, rather than the typical circle that you get with almost every other watch. All in all, this is a gorgeous timepiece. Materials The Luminor has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, stainless steel case, and alligator leather strap. These factors combine to make a watch with incredibly impressive materials. One possible complaint comes from people who will wear the Luminor as a dress watch, the reason being that they might want a precious metal instead of steel. In my opinion, though, stainless steel is the superior metal for such a robust watch. It is hard to complain about any of the materials that make up the Luminor. Movement The Panerai Luminor is an extensive collection with many different movements powering it. Looking at them from a broad perspective, I am very impressed with their quality. Things get even better when you focus in on one specific type of Luminor. I especially like the ones with an astounding 8-day power reserve. This means that you can wear your watch for a full day, power it up with kinetic energy, and then let it sit for an entire week on the shelf. When you decide to put it on again, the hands should still be spinning. Not only is this capability convenient, but it is also deeply impressive. General Craftsmanship The overwhelming impression you get when handling a Luminor is one of sturdiness. Just one touch will have you feeling that these timepieces are thick, heavy, and well built. The specifications back that up, as they have a relatively large amount of weight to them and impressive water resistance. Overall, the craftsmanship of these watches is undeniable, and purchasing one will most likely lead to decades of ownership without damage. Niche The Panerai Luminor is actually quite hard to define. On the one hand, its roots are in the aquatic category. You can see that influence in modern models in the form of 300m water resistance and a luminescent dial. On the other hand, these watches do not have bezels, which is are essential for dive pieces. What you end up with is somewhat of a dress watch, though much heavier and sturdier than most. To be honest, it is difficult to put the Luminor into a specific category. Overall Impression The Panerai Luminor is an unquestioned icon in the watch world. It is large, heavy, masculine, and well made. If that’s the kind of timepiece you’re looking for, then you can’t do much better than this collection. Whether you want to purchase it or not will come down to price and aesthetics. Those of you that love the look and have the cash shouldn’t hesitate to pick one of these beauties up. Those of you who don’t can look towards other options.

  6. The History of the Panerai Luminor

The Panerai Luminor was designed specifically for underwater commandos leading up to the Second World War. The watch was only available to military forces until 1993. Once the Panerai Luminor watch became available to the public, it was clear that it was a worldwide success for its value. And also for its purposeful functionality and rugged style. So it’s not a surprise that this watch has such a long and beautiful history. Panerai for the Royal Italian Navy Panerai was born when Giovanni Panerai opened a watch shop in Florence in 1860. The boutique immediately became an authorized dealer of some of the most reputable Swiss watch manufacturers of the time, including Rolex, Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe. By the early 20th century, Panerai began to supply the Royal Italian Navy with the range of high-precision instruments.   Leading up to the Second World War, Panerai put forth its first in-house prototype.  You guessed it, it was the Radiomir. This was the culmination of decades of research and tinkering within Officine Panerai as they initially filed for a patent for the Radiomir concept in 1916. The radium-based powder gave luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices, boasting high visibility in extreme conditions and excellent underwater adhesive elements. Radiomir This Radiomir model was initially made for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command. This division wanted a rugged watch that could survive the extreme underwater conditions that they faced on a regular basis. The watch met the specific requirements that the navy was looking for, particularly with its enhanced visibility and underwater readability thanks to its unique luminous Radiomir. Following a series of secretive tests that involved both Panerai and the Royal Italian Navy, the Radiomir became the official watch of these submerged troops. The Navy’s historical archives contend that just ten prototypes were produced in 1936. The Constant Evolution It took two full years for the functions of the 1936 prototype to actually make it into production. Despite this, the subsequent years were defined by a constant strive for improvement. They wanted to better it in order to continually meet the navy’s lofty requirements. Making sure that the watch was constantly up to date, Panerai an d the Royal Italian Navy worked together. The watches had to remain underwater in extreme conditions for long periods of time. It’s also important for it to have resistance to extreme tension. The use of overlapping plates on the dial and the steel reinforcement of the wire lugs made for further resistance and underwater visibility. Panerai also opted for a 47 mm cushion-shaped case.  When Rolex stopped supplying equipment, Officine Panerai opted to equip their watches with the Angelus 240 movement. This dramatic shift guaranteed tightness over time since it reduced the number of times required to wind the watch. Radiomir Becomes Luminor The final evolution in the development of the watch came when Officine Panerai developed a new self-luminous substance. The innovative Luminor substance superseded the former radium-based paste. That lead the company to file a patent for the compound in 1949, officially replacing the Radiomir. The Luminor substance was not only far more radiant than the Radiomir, but also much safer. The initial radium-based paste was actually highly radioactive. With the Second World War having now drawn to a close, Panerai was also able to continue the technical research. It  culminated the development of the Luminor. As well as further reinforced wire lugs, cushion-shaped case and a flat, wide bezel. The watch went down in the annals of history in 1993. It happened when Panerai Officine Put forth their very first public collection. Consisting of the classic Luminor, Luminor Marina and Mare Nostrum.  They immediately became highly sought-after items for collectors and enthusiasts due to its immense historical value. As well as its unbeatable underwater properties and rugged style. The release vaulted Panerai into widespread contention when it comes to the most technically skilled manufacturers in the world of fine watchmaking.

  7. Panerai Luminor Due Adds to Its Collection

Panerai watches are usually big, and while on the less-massive side, the Panerai Luminor hasn’t exactly deviated from the Italian watchmaker’s “more is more” attitude in making bold timepieces. Until recently. The Panerai Luminor Due collection has released a new version of the wildly popular watch with a 38mm case. It’s part of a package of six recent Dues that expands the field to include a new GMT and a variety of design updates. A Flash Though Luminor’s History This merits a quick look back at Panerai, founded in 1860. But not that far back, let’s just look to the 90s, 1993, specifically, when Panerai made the first Luminor watches available to the public. They had been making high-end military watches for decades. Their watchmaking expertise showed, and the world went wild for the Luminor, based on a Panerai design from the 1930s. But the thing is, these watches were big (and many are still big). The traditional cushion-shaped case comes in at 47mm! Not everyone will want to lug something like that around. So Panerai presented an alternative and a few years back they introduced the Luminor Due collection, a smaller and more subtle version of the now-iconic watch. The Luminor Due is more appropriate for dress casual and workwear, something that’s not so bulky it can’t slip under a nice cuffed shirt. We started with 42mm cases in 2016 and got a few 38mm models in 2018. Panerai Pitches to Women Now, of course, there is no rule that says a woman shouldn’t wear an oversized watch. From red carpets to fashion shoots, we’ve seen big watches work with a variety of looks. But women tend to buy timepieces in the 38mm and under range. With slimmed-down and more compact cases, plus a variety of vibrant strap colors, it’s hard not to see Panerai’s push to put this watch on the wrists of women. And vice versa, a red gold case on a burgundy strap goes equally well on a man’s wrist. The Latest Half Dozen So what are these six new watches? With three of the six models (PAM00926, PAM00927 and PAM00964), we have brushed titanium cases, sunburst dials and alligator straps. All have date windows and 72-hour power reserves, with water resistance up to 30 meters. Yes, Panerai purists will gripe that a company with such a deep dive-watch history should offer 100-meter resistance. And they have a point but you’re probably not diving for sunken treasure any time soon. Prices on the new watches start at around $6,000 USD and go up to $15,000. Now let’s take a closer look at the latest in the Luminor Due line. 1: PAM00926 This is the first time Panerai has gone with titanium on a 38mm watch. The dial keeps things simple with printed Arabic numerals. On the inside, you’ll find the automatic Calibre P.900 in-house movement. The watch comes with an alligator strap featuring a brushed-titanium buckle. 2: PAM00927 The bigger brother of the PAM00926 model, this 42mm case is also made of titanium and has the same movement that gives three days of power. 3: PAM00964 Things get just a tad more complicated when it comes to this entry. It’s a GMT! So that means we’ve got a GMT function in a micro-rotor movement (to keep the profile slim), the automatic in-house P.4002 caliber. It offers the same 72-hour reserve as the Calibre P.900. Beyond the dial’s date window, you’ve got a GMT hand topped by a traditional arrow, a small seconds/24-hour subdial that indicates AM or PM. Beige Super-LumiNova covers the indices and hands. With all of that going on, it’s the busiest dial of the new bunch. 4: PAM01043 This is one of the more popular of the latest additions and it’s easy to see why. It’s pure modern Panerai, no-nonsense with a tool-watch vibe that’s elevated by the contours of timeless Italian design. The polished stainless steel case looks classic on an alligator strap. The white dial is subtly contrasted by the black borders of the beige numerals and indices. 5: PAM01046  The big brother of the PAM01043, this 42mm watch wears wonderfully on its included deep brown calf leather strap. It shares the same in-house P.900 movement. 6: PAM01045  The last on the list we find the most expensive of the recent editions (north of 15k). You can probably tell from first glance it’s a bit higher-end than the others, likely due to its “Goldtech” case. Panerai took 18k gold and mixed it with platinum and copper to create an alloy that’s tarnish resistant and exudes more warmth than traditional all-gold. Match this red-hued alloy with a red alligator strap and you’ve got yourself a watch that wants to get out for a fun weekend. While the dial is similar to others above on the list, the hands are gold to go with the case and overall gleaming look. With toned-down sizes, elegant dials and a variety of strap colors, they’re versatile enough to go with any look short of black-tie formal. So maybe take your eye off that Swiss timepiece you’ve been considering and turn your gaze south to enjoy some Italian style.

  8. Statement Watches: What Your Timepiece Says

Looking for a watch that speaks for itself? Statement watches do just that. Putting a watch on your wrist has a larger impact than a simple fashion accessory. The world sees the timepiece that you choose to wear so make sure it represents you. The Mixed Messages of Rolex Welcome to the complicated world of Rolex. The iconic brand often sends differing and even conflicting messages. While a Rolex exudes a sense of sophistication and success, it also risks looking like overcompensation. Like the mid-life crisis decision to go out and buy a flashy sports car, you may look like you are trying too hard to impress. It depends on what you wear and how you wear it. A Rolex Submariner is a show of masculinity. Made famous by rugged movie icons from Steve McQueen to James Bond, the Submariner is a time-honored style statement that inevitably comes with a touch of testosterone. It’s a sports watch for the well-heeled, worn with a custom-tailored suit as easily as with a casual-chic ensemble that says your conservative side seamlessly blends with a bold desire for exploration. Flashier Rolex models offer quite different messaging. Sporting a gold Yacht Master indicates you want to be seen as you cruise around town in your sure-to-get-noticed luxury car. A steel Rolex Datejust flips that script, telling the world that you appreciate elegance but also value functionality and downplay the need for attention. A Rolex Daytona is all about action. Like the world of high-end racing that inspired the classic watch, you like a fast lifestyle filled with glamorous people and have the cash to keep the adventure going. “Sporty But Still Practical” While titans of business and fashion-forward watch aficionados may gravitate to Rolex, lovers of active lifestyles lean more toward Omega. A classic Omega Speedmaster offers luxury and durability that says you’re equally at home on the golf course or hiking the Himalayas. You’ve chosen a luxury timepiece that can take a few bumps and hold up to get passed down as a family heirloom. You’re precise, dependable and have a sense of upscale style. Your watch should be the same. “Well Rounded and Appreciate Understatement” While it may cost as much as a Rolex, an IWC is much less known and not as likely to get recognized as a pricey timepiece. And that’s a good thing! Someone who wears an IWC Portugieser showcases their exquisite taste with no need to show it off to the world. Other like-minded people will appreciate the classic Swiss watch. An IWC shows you are comfortable in your achievements and need not be defined by your watch. With the elegance of a Patek Phillippe, upscale vibe of a Rolex and boldness of a Breitling, an IWC can go with a sharp suit or sporty weekend wear with equal ease. “Trendy” Slipping a splashy Hublot Big Bang or bold-faced TAG Heuer on your wrist tells the world you’ve come to have a good time and want to be seen doing it. You’re given to forward-fashion style with sleeves rolled up to convey both a vibe of laid-back luxury and to show off your timepiece. Larger models made of precious metals with brash faces tell all you’re successful and you want them to know it. You may not be begging for attention but that watch you are flashing is sure to get some.   “Up for Adventure” Want to let the world know you’re ready to shove off and discover new lands? Slip on a Panerai Luminor. Developed for special forces in the Italian Navy, Panerai is both durable and dripping with a sense of Old World style. You like your suits well cut, steaks rare and could be heading off to skydive or scuba along exotic shores at a moment’s notice. Breitling is another brand that tells the world that adventure is at hand. “I’ve Made It” Putting one of the world’s most-expensive watches on your wrist broadcasts an unmistakable message that you breathe the rare air of the ultra-successful. But you need not be uptight about it. The classic design of a Patek Philippe Nautilus gives off a sense of simple elegance with just a hint of a sporty side. You may be among the world’s elite with an appreciation for life’s finer things but don’t make a big show of it. Why go bold on your wrist when your success speaks for itself? But the most important element in the message you send the world is you. Statement watches will help you out with that. Stay true to a sense of style that matches how you feel and how both you and your watch are perceived will follow.

For those who might not be aware, K stands for the most recent Panerai model and the figures (1,130th of 1,500) represent the number of timepieces that have been produced. A good number of Officine Panerai limited edition models were created in 1993. And when we say models, we’re basically talking about Panerai Luminor, Luminor Marina as well a model of the Mare Nostrum chronograph. What Are the Differences in Officine Panerai Watches? Well, first off, you should be aware that the differences lie in the features. So of course, it’s basically everything from the movement to the dial design to the casing design and more. Now, as a Panerai enthusiast, it’s great to know that the dial design of Panerai timepieces is usually unique. What’s more, the glass on Panerai watches differ from model to model; for instance, one could come with a date feature and another model might not. The bottom line; the dials of Panerai watches are made differently, so of course, it’s up to you to stick to what holds your fancy. So, What About Panerai Casing Design? Now, if you’re looking to get your first Panerai, you should be aware that the casing design looks the same regardless of the model. Essentially, Panerai watches come with two prominent case designs — so it’s either you go for the piece with an exposed crown or the one with a crown protector. It’s also worth noting that the brand has other variations on the casing. So yes, depending on the model you choose, you’re likely to come across everything from flat to polished to black and titanium. Radiomir View this post on Instagram The distinctive element of the Radiomir 1940 3 Days PAM662 is the brown dial, its colour inspired by that of the vintage watches in which the dial has become discoloured by the luminous material used to achieve exceptional visibility at night. #panerai #officinepanerai #pam662 A post shared by Panerai (@panerai) on May 18, 2017 at 10:32am PDT Popularly known as the first model of Officine Panerai, the Radiomir case is a great pick for those looking to get something that’s sure to go well with formal wears — say suits and the likes. The Radiomir model boasts curved cases which are then rounded to give a classic look. As for the sizes, you’re likely to find everything from 42mm to 43mm to 45mm to 46mm and 47mm. Panerai Ferrari These are special edition watches that are not as popular among Paneristis. But of course, you can still get a piece or two if they seem to catch your eye. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the Panerai Ferrari is that its crown comes with a pretty rough grip. What’s more, this case style doesn’t have a device that protects the crown. And the cases are available in sizes 40mm and 45mm. Other Things to Keep in Mind You should keep in mind that Panerai watches are available in either manual or automatic movement. So yes, it’s all up to you to stick to what works best for you. To sum it up, Panerai cases are generally made out of steel or titanium, and of course, both are definitely sure to stand the test of time.

  10. Watch Guide: NFL Stars and Their Luxury Watches

From Rolex and Patek Philippe to Panerai and Breitling, NFL stars love their luxury watches. You can almost always catch top players with high-end timepieces on their wrists when they’re off the field. And sometimes on! Take a look at some of today’s football greats and the amazing watches they wear. Rolex is a Touchdown With NFL Players Rolex is by far the most popular watch in the NFL. Here are just a few of the top players that sport the luxury Swiss watch brand. Many call him “Matty Ice” but you could also call Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan “Kermit.” The latter is the nickname of the green-themed Rolex Submariner that’s often seen on Ryan’s wrist. With a vibrant green bezel that beautifully contrasts a black dial, the discontinued 16610LV sports watch is a must-have for serious collectors. Ryan’s teammate Julio Jones is all about the Sky-Dweller. Considered one of the best wide receivers to ever play the game, Jones also makes a statement off the field with the Everrose timepiece. The Sky-Dweller is a newer entry in the Rolex line, having debuted in 2012. It’s since gained acclaim for its durability and practical functions in a sophisticated package. Staying with Atlanta, running back Devonta Freeman makes a big impact with his yellow gold Day-Date Rolex President. At 41 millimeters, Freeman’s Day-Date is larger than most others in the line and stands out as an enviable dress watch. The Day-Date President has been a prestige timepiece since its debut in 1956, crafted completely of precious metals with a design that never feels dated. More Rolex Timepieces Known for his bold fashion choices, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton wears a Rolex Yacht-Master II when he’s off the field. One of the first luxury sports watches to garner international attention, the Rolex Yacht-Master has embodied the spirit of sailing since the 1950s. The chronograph that was crafted to withstand the rigors of regattas is a quintessential model of combining practical functions and timeless style. A post shared by Cam Newton (@cameron1newton) on Jul 30, 2018 at 2:13pm PDT The star quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys often has a Rolex Datejust 41 on his wrist. Much like Dak Prescott’s classic style when he strolls red carpets, the Datejust is the epitome of enduring elegance. The watch debuted in 1945 and later incarnations have maintained the unique design that makes it one of the world’s most recognizable watches. Dak’s Datejust 41 features a dark rhodium dial that’s offset by 18 carat gold hour markers. A jubilee bracelet completes the classic design. Russell Wilson, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, has also been spotted wearing a Datejust. The Kansas City Chief’s wide receiver has been spotted with his gold Rolex Daytona during warm-ups for the Valero Alamo Bowl. While it’s never been verified by photos or video, legend has it Thomas wore the watch during all four quarters. True or not, the Daytona is a good choice to withstand the blows of an NFL game. Check out a brief history on Rolex watches here. A Saint Who Sports Panerai As iconic as the city he plays for, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has a collection of Panerai watches. The Italian watchmakers have been crafting exclusive timepieces in Florence since 1860. “Breesus,” as he’s known by fans, has been spotted wearing a Historic Base Panerai Luminor, a minimalistic marvel with a black dial and vintage-style cream-colored markers. The defensive tackle for the Jacksonville Jaguars dropped $150,000 on a Patek Philippe World Time soon after he solidified his spot in the NFL. The watch models are recognizable by their dials that track multiple time zones, while the limited production has made them sought-after watches since their debut in the 1930s. But Malik didn’t stop there! He soon picked up a Patek Nautilus in rose gold and a Patek Philippe 5205 in white gold to complete his collection. His go-to Calatrava has a rose gold case with a sapphire crystal back and Patek’s trademark hobnail-style bezel. An enamel dial features Roman numerals and Rodgers finishes his watch with a sophisticated brown alligator strap. A Big Fan of Breitling One of the most fashion-forward players in the NFL has a love for Breitling timepieces. New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. gets attention for his talented work on the field. It’s hard not to notice his wild mane of floppy blond hair and the creative designs shaved into his scalp. But he’s also got a sophisticated side and we’re as likely to spot Beckham looking formal in a tailored suit at galas and events. That’s where you’ll see him wearing a custom diamond-encrusted Breitling chronograph. Wherever you find sports stars, you will encounter luxury timepieces and the NFL is no exception.
