  2. What is a Quartz Movement Watch?

What is a Quartz Movement Watch?

When you’re on the market shopping for a watch, you’re going to want to choose one that is right for you. A lot of shoppers base their purchase on probably a few things: how the watch’s exterior looks, how the watch actually fits their wrist and would this watch fit their personality and even their style? Surely all of those are important things to consider when buying a watch, but what about the inside of your watch? You know, like the thing that actually makes your watch tick? This is where a quartz movement watch comes into play. You may have heard of it before, but wasn’t quite sure what it is because of it’s semi-fancy name. But basically, a quartz movement watch operates through a battery that sends power via a small quartz crystal. That small quartz crystal’s job is to create vibrations that generate movement of the second hand. You can immediately tell a quartz movement watch by the way it “ticks” the seconds off. Literally. You have options when it comes to choosing your timepiece. But the unmatched accuracy of a quartz watch is the primary benefit of choosing one for your watch. Quality Quartz Watch Movement Today, there is little reason to go with an old-fashion winding watch unless it is a family heirloom handed down from one generation to the next. When looking for a new watch with an accurate accounting of the time and calendar, look no further than a quartz movement watch. A quartz movement watch only needs an occasional replacement battery to keep it running accurately. In comparison, a mechanical watch requires regular winding. And while many are now equipped with self-winding features generated by the movement of the wrist, they often still require some winding.  Swiss Quartz Movement Traditionally, the Swiss are known as the best producers of timekeepers with a history that dates back centuries. Some of the top Swiss watch makers include Rolex, Omega and  Patek Philippe. While they’re all part of the elite, Patek Philippe is a longtime favorite family of independent watchmakers. As early as the 1830s, the brand has been considered the finest in quality and luxury in watches. Their Swiss quartz movement line is no different. They are a step above when it comes to design and their attention to detail. Japanese Quartz Movement Not surprisingly, the Japanese developed their own take and lines of quartz movement watches. The Seiko line began late in the 19th century with a young man, by the name of Kintaro Hattori, opening his own clock and watch repair shop. Shortly afterward, Hattori expanded and started his own company. The name of it was Seikosha, meaning exquisite or successful. His business truly became that with Seiko, a worldwide well-known, quality brand. Seiko was the first to produce a quartz movement watch back in the late 1960s. And that proved to be accurate within five seconds each month and vastly more accurate than any other watch of the time. Today, the Seiko brand is known for its accuracy, but thats not all. Its style is for any situation from a business meeting to a sporting event.  Quartz Movement Watches Available at WatchShopping.com There is no doubt the watch has come a long way with technology. There’s no saying where the future of watches can go, but so far, it’s been a pleasant surprise to watch. It remains a mainstay of the wardrobe as well as a functional timepiece, which a smartphone can never replace. When shopping for your next wristwatch, be sure to peruse the wide selection here at WatchShopping.com. Whether you’re looking for a quartz movement watch or an automatic, we carry the finest and most fashionable watches for men and women.

  4. 3 Types of Watches Every Businessman Should Own

3 Types of Watches Every Businessman Should Own

For some businesspeople, a wristwatch is more than a period telling gadget; it’s an announcement. “A watch is the best icebreaker there is,” says Hamilton Powell, the CEO of Crown and Caliber, a free market for extravagance watches. There are different types of watches for different styles. Quoting him further; “A watch educates individuals concerning the sort of individual you are and what you esteem,” Powell includes. “The person who wears a blinged-out gold-precious stone Hublot is altogether different than the person with a vintage tempered steel Zenith chronograph.” Things to Consider for Different Types of Watches Everybody knows the do-re-mi of beautiful type of watches. An “apparatus” watch of some higher request in a perfect world — a Fifties-birthed magnificence as yet cruising or taking off on 60 years after its presentation. At that point one needs an ideal dress watch, flawlessness is accomplished when the number hands are correctly double the number of dials, as anything that may consider beautification here can be dispatched to the “superfluous things” division. At long last, a watch that can go from shoreline to bar without raising an eyebrow or inspiring the spontaneous enthusiasm of the individuals who take an over the top sparkle to other individual things. This will probably lie at the more reasonable end of the range, however ought to never show up déclassé to an individual watch aficionado. The level of division between each of the three indeed relies upon the individual prerequisites of the wearer. 1: Rolex Submariner Definitely one of Rolex‘s most popular (and best-selling) collections is their Submariner watches. This is likely the most replicated watch structure on the planet, yet individuals still rush to the first one. Rolex has been making a similar structure since the 1950s. The Rolex Submariner watch winds up looking great even with formal wear like a tuxedo. It is not hard to express that the Rolex Submariner is an attractive watch with a respectable name on the dial — but it is actually way more than that. Rolex practically made the accommodating indulgence sports watch fever with the Submariner. Continuously incredibly created, the Rolex Submariner is maybe the first do anything, go anyplace, hero watch. From there, it turned into a famous culture symbol since all it was making a decent attempt at was being the best of the breed. Rolex continues improving the Submariner each couple of years. And the social event keeps on showing signs of improvement. All things being equal, with each new emphasis — the Rolex Submariner will probably never lose its spirit. You genuinely need to claim no less than one to comprehend what a significant watch is truly is. 2: Casio G-Shock Casio first introduced us all to their G-Shock watches during the 1980s. It was a timepiece that in a brief instant evoked an authentic feeling with customers. Here was a too sturdy, too valuable, and also moderate clock that made wearing a digital quartz watch cool. Additionally, it summed up everything that was appropriate with the Japanese hardware industry. In more than 30 years of history, the G-Shock gathering has produced endless varieties, models, styles, and extraordinary releases. The world can’t get enough of G-Shock watches. Even the most subsidized watch gatherers can get a kick out of a definitive fun watch. Indeed, even the developing smartwatch industry today has a daunting struggle attempting to contend with the articulate physical strength of the G-Shock. It is absurd to expect to prescribe one Casio G-Shock demonstrate or another. 3: MB&F Horological Machine This watch is one of the more specialty recommendations on this rundown. MB&F watches are innately intended for the few, not the many. Therefore, I would prefer not to prescribe an explicit MB&F Horological Machine watch demonstrate because that will be up to somebody’s specific taste. Likewise, the more significant part of them are modified versions and just not excessively simple to get. Overall, MB&F watches are priced during the many thousands or a massive number of dollars. So, why prescribe to these types of watches? These are the little organizations who are mixing contemporary craft with watchmaking, and the outcome is collectible and cool. To acknowledge where the watch business has originated from and where it is going, you can’t turn out badly with a cutting edge top of the line free watch producer, and their informal pioneer is MB&F.

  5. Top 5 Watch Brands That Will Hold Their Value

Top 5 Watch Brands That Will Hold Their Value

There are two types of watch enthusiasts that we’ve seen over the years. We have those who only want a watch that does its job remarkably well — regardless if it’s quartz, mechanical, or otherwise. On the other hand, we have the watch collectors who consider timepieces to be investments. Either way, you’re going to want to look into watch brands that’ll hold it’s value. So, just after this short intro, we’ve listed five watch brands that retain their value incredibly well. A few years down the lane, inflation should have reared its head again, and prices should be flying through the roof. 1: Rolex They’re the undisputed champions when it comes to brands that hold their value well—almost like real estate. The reason for this is simple: this Swiss brand has a lot of rich history backing it up. They were the first watch to be on Mount Everest on the wrists of both Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Likewise, they are well known to be the first watchmaker to engineer a dive watch. With these kinds of achievements and more, they’ve become the world’s most renowned and sought-after watch brand. Recommended models include: Go for the Deepsea and Submariner models due to their demand. Oyster Perpetual has always been a great choice too! 2: Patek Philippe Other than their tradition which has lasted for 177 years now, exclusivity, power, and class are Patek Philippe’s keywords. They once made a statement that goes along the lines of “You don’t own a Patek Philippe watch, you keep it for the next generation.” The brand’s watches are mechanical masterpieces with materials, parts, and movements all manufactured and assembled in-house by their artisans. Still, despite the fantastic resale value they have, the only issue is getting even one copy in good condition. Recommended models include: Nautilus, Chronograph, and Aquanaut are models you should consider. 3: Jaeger-LeCoultre While Jaeger-LeCoultre might not have the same fame that the two brands mentioned above have, but they have the same ingredients those two have. The watchmaker has a tradition (founded way back in 1833) in the art of making mechanical movements. They take this art to the extent that they have commissioned movements for other watch brands, including Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet. Their watches range from the usual classic/dress watches to sports models. Recommended models include: The Reverso, Master Ultra-Thin, Master Compressor, Master Control, Geophysic, and Duomètre are our recommendations. 4: Omega While these watches don’t come with the price tag of all the brands we’ve mentioned, they still hold their value remarkably well. The clock has numerous achievements. For one, the Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the watch worn to the first lunar landing by Buzz Aldrin in 1969. Likewise, this Swiss company is now making their movements (the Co-Axial) in-house, rather than buying and modifying ETA movements as they did before. This trend is gratifying (with a positive effect on the resale value) for any watchmaker that calls itself a luxury brand. Recommended models include: You should get any one between the Seamaster, Speedmaster, or the Constellation. 5: TAG Heuer TAG Heuer didn’t start late in the game. The watchmaker formed in 1860, and since then, has been making luxury watches for people with diverse preferences. Nevertheless, the brand’s winning-formula is their marketing. TAG Heuer has appeared on the wrists of famous people such as Elvis Presley and Chris Hemsworth as a marketing strategy that works. The fact that their watches keep the vintage, but functional design, while upgrading the internals makes it all the more enjoyable to use. Recommended models include: Any collection of their flagship models will never be complete without the presence of the Carrera, Monza, and Monaco. Why are They Considered Great Investments? It’s not because they make rare, limited copies. The reason is just that the watch community usually reveres most watchmakers that engineer mechanical timepieces with innovative movements done in-house as great brands. Quartz watches use IC (integrated circuits) which function as the clock, timer, alarm, GPS tracker, etc. On the other hand, all of these functions are created from scratch by moving mechanisms called complications in a mechanical watch. Aside from that, we all look at the heritage. The fact that the brands themselves have tradition, thus social proof creates a demand for them. Watch investors are just the ones who supply them, at a future date. Final Thought Keep in mind that we consider only the iconic timepieces in the various collections of these brands the real investment. Anything that’s not well-loved and wanted typically won’t be valued well. So, be very careful.

Women will be pleased with it too, as there are smaller versions with more feminine designs. Best of all, both of you will get a masterpiece from the biggest name in horology. That is a win-win situation and it will be extra fun when you wear them out together. The models pictured above are great examples of watches for couples who want to match. The Datejust 41 comes in a 41mm Oystersteel case and bracelet, with a sunray dial in azzurro blue. Meanwhile, the Datejust 31 features a matching bright blue dial in a 31mm case and bracelet made of Oystersteel and white gold. Both timepieces also have excellent specifications, such as perpetual self-winding movements and water resistance capacities of up to 100 meters.  2. Cartier Santos  Cartier is another excellent brand that has a fantastic reputation in the watch world. It is synonymous with luxury and upper-class fashion, so if that is what you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place. The shape and dial design on the Cartier Santos is the same for options that cater to men or women. The masculine side of the catalog has larger pieces with dark coloring, while the feminine models have smaller and brighter options. Each Cartier Santos timepiece comes with a reliable automatic movement and top-tier craftsmanship, too. There are even unisex models available! The Cartier Santos-Dumont Ref. W2SA0011 and W2SA0012 serve as the ideal option for couples who want the exact same his and hers watches. Both timepieces come in a steel case with a rose gold bezel and an alligator leather strap in black. These two also feature the same silver sunray dial with Roman numerals and sword-shaped hands in blue. Lastly, they are both powered by quartz movements and boast 100-meter water resistance ratings. The only difference is that the W2SA0011 has a larger case at 43.5 mm x 31.4 mm while the W2SA0012 is the smaller model at 38 mm x 27.5 mm.  3. Longines Evidenza  Longines has long held the reputation as being one of the best affordable options out there. While many other Swiss brands charge upwards of $5,000 USD per product, this company manages to pack a ton of quality into pieces that cost just $800 USD to $3,000 USD. The Evidenza is a fantastic example of that trend and is perfect for couples seeking his and her watches. Considering that you will be buying two products with this purchase, going with a cheaper option might be the best way to go. The Longines Evidenza Ref. L2.642.4.73.4 and L2.142.4.73.2 look very similar at first glance, but they actually have slightly different features. While both have the same tonneau-shaped case, brown leather strap, silver flinqué dial, and date window, the second is presented in a smaller case at 26.00 x 30.60 mm. Meanwhile, the first model comes with a 33.10 x 38.75 mm case and has an additional small second counter above the date window. Also, while they are both powered by automatic movements, the bigger watch has a better power reserve of up to 50 hours while the latter only has a 45-hour power reserve.  4. Breitling Chronomat  Those familiar with Breitling might find it a little strange that they are on this list. This is because the brand is most famous for making large, robust timepieces for men. Still, its women’s options are just as good, especially in the case of the Chronomat. While the men’s variant looks like a typical sports watch, the women’s version is both smaller and more distinctly feminine. Despite their differences, these two timepieces match incredibly well and are great picks.  The Breitling Chronomat B01 42 and Chronomat Automatic 36 are perfect for couples who want something subtle and not too loud for their matching watches. The B01 42 is presented in a 42mm stainless steel and platinum case with either a rubber strap in black or a stainless steel bracelet. On the other hand, the Automatic 36 comes in a 36mm stainless steel and 18K grey gold case with a black rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet as well. Their dials are offered in a variety of colors for your choosing, including silver, black, grey, and ice blue. That said, although they have similar color schemes, these two models have rather different layouts. The larger model boasts a chronograph display with three sub-dials, while the ladies’ model simply has a date window at 6 o’clock. Lastly, both watches are equipped with self-winding movements, but they do have different power reserves. 5. Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso  Jaeger-LeCoultre sometimes gets lost in Swiss watch discussion, but it is every bit as skilled as more well-known brands. The Reverso is a representation of that mastery, as it is a perfect hybrid of craftsmanship, quality, and class. The layouts of the men’s and ladies’ models are quite different, as the larger option has a sub-dial. Nevertheless, the aesthetics of these pieces are quite similar, and they make for excellent his and hers watches that you would be lucky to share with your watches. The Reverso Classic Duoface Small Seconds comes in a rectangular stainless steel case paired with a leather strap in black. It has a simple layout with Arabic numerals, blued steel hands, and a sub-dial for the seconds. Another cool thing about this model is that it also has a back dial with a second time zone and a handy 24-hour display. The other watch featured, which caters to women, is the Reverso Classic Monoface. This timepiece is presented in a matching rectangular pink gold case with a black leather strap. It also has a straightforward dial display with Arabic numerals and exquisite gold hands. These two mechanical timepieces make for lovely couple watches.  6. Tag Heuer Aquaracer One of the sportier options on this list is the Aquaracer from TAG Heuer. The men’s version has a classic diver aesthetic and is one of the most popular watches in the world. The feminine variant, on the other hand, is daintier, lighter in coloring, and is studded with jewels on its dial. Together, they create a matching, distinctly sporty look that most couples will love. The new Aquaracer Professional 300 serves as the perfect representation of the aforementioned description. Available in either 43mm or 36mm, this model comes in a steel case and bracelet with a rotating ceramic bezel in blue. While both sizes feature dials with the usual timekeeping components, the smaller watch actually has jewel-studded hour markers instead of regular ones. Lastly, in terms of specifications, both models are equipped with the Caliber 5 Automatic, which has a 38-hour power reserve.  7. Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra  Each model in the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra collection is incredibly well-made, has excellent durability, and is fantastic to look at. Those descriptions go for both the men’s and women’s versions, which hold up well both on their own and as a pair. If you are looking for an excellent his and hers watch which will not break the bank, then you cannot go wrong with this gorgeous line. A perfect example of this would be the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Annual Calendar 38.55, which comes in a red gold case paired with a leather bracelet in brown. Its dial features a horizontal teak pattern, a day-date display, and red gold hour markers coated in luminescent material. Meanwhile, the Aqua Terra 30mm has an extremely similar layout and color scheme. The main difference between the two models is that the Aqua Terra 30mm has a smaller size, and it only features a date window on its dial. You do not have to worry about reliability, either, because both models are powered by automatic movements that are COSC-certified. Ultimately, these watches are perfect for couples who want luxury couple watches that match almost 100%.  8. Daniel Wellington Sheffield  Daniel Wellington is the perfect brand for couples who want affordable couples watches with minimalist and classy aesthetics. They have a wide range of timepieces that are all versatile enough to be used in both casual and formal situations. While you and your partner can choose individual models, the brand also offers watch sets in pairs, which is perfect for couples who want to really match.  An example of this would be their Sheffield set which comes with 2 Sheffield models in 38mm and 28mm cases. While they differ in terms of measurements, their designs and technical specifications are the same. Both boast cases are made of double-plated stainless steel, paired with suave leather straps in black. They also have straightforward black dials which follow a simple layout, featuring only rose gold-plated hands and indices. Lastly, both Sheffield models are powered by Japanese quartz movements and are rain-resistant.  9. Casio Vintage We all know Casio as one of the top manufacturers of well-crafted Japanese timepieces that are reasonably priced. They have a rather extensive catalogue that can be broken down into many different collections. The Casio Vintage line is ideal for couples who want retro-inspired, digital watches that will not break the bank. What makes it even better is that it consists of a variety of options that differ in color, design, and functions.  The watches pictured above are the A1000MB-1BVT and the A1000MG-9VT. They are the same Illuminator models, but they simply come in different colors. They both feature stainless steel cases with Milanese bands and have digital displays. Some of their functions include super LED light, daily alarm, stopwatch, automatic calendar, and many more. Indeed, these models are perfect for couples who are seeking his and hers watches that will truly make their everyday lives more convenient.  10. Gucci Grip Gucci is a pretty popular brand among lovers who want matching apparel. However, aside from that, they are also a good source of couple watches for those who enjoy and have the money for luxury. One of their most eccentric models is the Gucci Grip, which makes for a unique and unconventional option for you and your partner.  The Gucci Grip is a unisex model that comes in different colors. These watches are presented in 38mm cases with unique dial layouts that feature 3 windows for the hour, minute, and date. When it comes to technical details, the two models in the photo above are both powered by quartz movements and have water resistance ratings of 100 meters.  11. Timex Reissue  Next up on our list is the Timex Reissue, which basically consists of watches inspired by the 1970s. Aside from having a lot of options for both men and women to choose from, this collection is perfect for couples who enjoy timepieces with vintage, quintessential aesthetics. What is even better is that all the pieces in this range are affordable, yet also amazing in quality.  The models in the photo above serve as very subtle his and hers watches. They show that you do not have to match exactly, especially if you have different preferences; getting watches from the same collection works just as well. For example, the TW2U61100ZV and TW2U81400VQ make a great pair, blending well together despite having different exteriors. Both come in 38mm cases with straightforward analog dials that include luminescent hour markers and day-date windows. They both have striking two-toned rotating bezels that fit together well, even with different color schemes. They are also equipped with quartz movements and have 50-meter water resistance capacities.  12. Tudor Prince and Tudor Princess  If you and your partner are willing to splurge on a pair of quality Swiss couples watches, then the Tudor Prince/Princess collection is the perfect thing to check out. Said range offers a wide selection of elegant timepieces that are bound to elevate any outfit. Generally, the Tudor Prince models come in larger case sizes while the Princess has a more dainty exterior. However, in terms of design, they are both very similar.  The perfect example of a matching Tudor Prince and Princess is the M74034-0002 and M92514-0004. These two models basically have the same design, except one comes in a 34mm case while the other is presented in a 22mm case. When it comes to the dials, both feature silver mosaic patterns with slim indices, luminescent hands, and magnified date windows at 3 o’clock. Lastly, they are both powered by self-winding movements with a power reserve of 38 hours.  13. Patek Philippe Nautilus  If you and your partner share Haute Horlogerie as an interest, then getting these Patek Philippe Nautilus watches can also serve as a form of investment for both of you. These watches are ideal for couples who are serious about luxury timepieces, especially if both parties are willing to shell out a huge amount of money. Having matching Patek pieces with your significant other is probably the dream of many patrons and enthusiasts in the watch community.  The Nautilus Ref. 5711/1A and 7118/1A serve as a great option for couples out there. The 5711/1A comes in a 40mm stainless steel case with a green dial that boasts a horizontally embossed pattern. Meanwhile, the 7118/1A is presented in a slimmer 35.2mm stainless steel case, with a smoke gray dial that has an uneven horizontal teak pattern. Both these models also feature the iconic Nautilus rounded octagonal bezels. Lastly, both are powered by self-winding movements and have date windows at different positions.  14. If you and your partner often do such activities together, then this serves as a practical option for both of you!  The Suunto 9 is available in different colors namely: granite blue, birch white, all black, and moss gray. It is presented in a 43mm stainless steel and glass fiber case, with a touchscreen dial. Some of its functions include activity tracking, sleep tracking, a digital compass, weather display, heart rate measurement, and many more.  15. Bulgari Bulgari  The Bulgari Bulgari collection is perfect for couples who prefer accessories that are a balance between classic and contemporary. They offer a selection of models that come in different styles and sizes so you and your partner are bound to find the ideal timepieces for each of you. The cool thing about this range is that even if you do not choose the exact same model, the general aesthetic is the same for every piece in the collection. As such, it is still quite obvious that you are both sporting matching couples watches.  The Ref. 103226 and Ref. 102942 are the perfect examples of this because they have very different exteriors that still manage to look like they match. The first comes in a 41mm carbon-treated steel case, with a matte black dial and rose gold hour markers. The Ref. 102942 is presented in a 23mm stainless steel case with a black sunray dial and diamond indices. They also differ in technical details, since the larger model is powered by an automatic caliber while the smaller watch is equipped with a quartz movement. That said, what truly ties these two models together is their identical, perfectly round cases and their bezels, which are both carefully engraved with the Bulgari signature in the same font.  16. Nomos Glashuette Tangente  The Nomos Glashutte Tangente is a gorgeous collection that would definitely appeal to those who enjoy minimalist aesthetics. This is the perfect range for couples who have the same simple yet artsy preferences. Since they offer models that have different functions and sizes, it will be a breeze for you and your partner to find ones that fit both of your criteria.  The Reference 131 and 151 can be options for couples who want to go with slightly different styles. Lastly, both are equipped with self-winding mechanical movements. Both models feature the distinctive Bulova logo in lieu of a 12 o’clock marker, tying the traditional aesthetics of these pieces together. How to Choose the Right Couple Watches?  After going through that list, you are probably a little more serious about getting matching his and hers watches with your significant other. Here are some things to look out for when trying to find those perfect couples watches for you and your partner.  Establish a common ground. Whether it is a mutual decision or a surprise gift, you have to know the other person’s aesthetic and design preferences before making a purchase. If you both have similar tastes, then it would be fairly easy to find matching couples watches. However, if your tastes do differ, then it would be best to find a middle ground so that both parties can make the most out of it. For example, you can opt to get different watches from one collection instead of getting the exact same model.  Know your price range. As with any purchase, it is important to know your budget. Having a specific price range in mind would allow you to filter your options when trying to find the perfect couple watches. For example, if you have the means to buy luxury timepieces, then you can focus on checking out brands like Rolex, Tag Heuer, Omega, etc. These are luxury brands that have extensive catalogues with expensive models of different sizes and designs.  Identify your ideal specifications. This is another fairly important step in choosing the right couple’s watches because you want both parties to be able to make the most out of their timepieces. Just like with the price range, knowing your ideal specifications will make the decision-making process a lot easier. For example, if you and your partner live an active lifestyle, opting for a multi-functional sports watch or a smartwatch would be the ideal choice. If you are a couple that loves traveling, then matching GMT models can be a great option as well!  Final Thoughts  Looking for the perfect his and hers watches for you and your partner can be a difficult task, especially if you do not know which brands to check out. Hopefully, the list we curated can help in narrowing down your options, so that you both have a better idea of what you want. The models mentioned are just some of the well-crafted timepieces that the industry has to offer, so rest assured that you will find the perfect couple watches sooner or later!  If you’re interested in listicles, make sure to check out our piece on the Top 20 Eco-Friendly Watches.  Photo Credits: Official Watch Sites

  7. Floyd Mayweather’s $18 Million ‘Billionaire’ Watch

Floyd Mayweather’s $18 Million ‘Billionaire’ Watch

When you look around the watch industry, you’ll find that each company has a unique brand. Whether they are sporty TAG Heuer, affordable Seiko, or luxurious Rolex, they have a niche that they fit into. This same trend is true in the world of public personalities. In the case of Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, a big part of his brand is having expensive taste and spending massive amounts of money on various luxuries. One of them is his watch collection, and no piece in it reflects his brand better than his Billionaire watch from Jacob & Co. Price One misconception people have about this watch is the price of it. They see its name and assume it costs a billion dollars, but that is not the case. Instead, Mayweather paid roughly $18 million for it. One thing to note is that while there are many diamond encrusted timepieces out there for purchase, there is only one of this specific model. The owner of Jacob & Co. has expressed interest in making more that are similar to it but has no plans to make the Billionaire watch a mainstream product. Jacob & Co. The brand behind the Billionaire watch has mixed reviews in the watch community. On one hand, many people believe that their products are overpriced and too flashy. One of the top criticisms is that they prop their brand up with expensive celebrity endorsements, rather than making truly exceptional timepieces. Others see this brand as one of the few original creators out there. Rather than producing products that look like every other watch on the market, they come up with designs that are sure to catch your eye, whether you like them or not. Ultimately, Jacob & Co. does not fit everyone’s personal style, and I wouldn’t personally purchase one of their products when there are so many excellent brands out there as well. That being said, there is definitely a market for them. Breaking away from the orthodoxy of the watch market can be fun, and this company allows you to do that. The Inside Now, back to the Billionaire watch. While this product might just look like a massive diamond bracelet, it has respectable machinery on the inside too. The movement in it is Swiss-made, has a 72-hour power reserve, and incorporates a tourbillon. While I would prefer a longer reserve for such an expensive product, you’re also likely not going to wear this piece outside of occasional events. As a result, you’ll probably have to reset it every time you put it on. The tourbillon is a complication that watch manufacturers love to incorporate. While it is not especially useful for timekeeping, consumers see it as an indication of manufacturing mastery. Though Jacob & Co. is not in the upper echelon of timepiece brands, they have the ability to flex their skill and make this difficult complication function properly in the Billionaire watch. One more thing to note is that this watch uses a skeleton style, so you can see everything that is going on inside. The Outside The main draw of this watch is not the inside, though. Instead, it is the outside, which is encrusted with a massive amount of diamonds. In fact, it has 260 carats between every jewel on it. You’ll notice two things right away when you look at this product. First, that there are diamonds on virtually every inch of it. Second, that those jewels are quite large. Similar products often incorporate only a few diamonds, and they are frequently quite small. Jacob & Co. bucks that trend with massive jewels and a substantial sum of them. One thing I must note about Jacob & Co. is that they know what your criticisms of this watch are. The truth is that they created this product specifically because so many people would hate its look. It is absolutely outrageous, it is gaudy, it practically hurts to look at, and all of that is on purpose. Creating timepieces is an art form, and sometimes that means releasing a product that people don’t like to look at. The Billionaire watch is charming because it is a lavish monstrosity, not in spite of that fact. I usually close articles by explaining who should purchase the discussed product and who shouldn’t. In the case of Floyd Mayweather’s Billionaire watch, just about every single one of you will fit into the latter category. Not only is the $18 million price tag out of range for the vast majority of consumers, but the look of this piece is definitely not for everyone. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun discussing it. Watch collecting, like boxing, is sometimes a spectator sport. Floyd Mayweather seems to be a master at putting on a good show in both domains. Photos credited to Jacob & Co unless otherwise stated

  8. The New Audemars Piguet Code 11.59

The New Audemars Piguet Code 11.59

Many consider Audemars Piguet (AP) to be one of the greatest watch companies in the world. In fact, if you look at various lists of the top brands in the world, AP routinely makes it into the top 5. What is unique about this company is the lack of diversity in their catalog. While most others have scores of models to choose from, AP almost exclusively sells a model called the Royal Oak and an alternate version of it, the Royal Oak Offshore. That being said, if the next few years go as planned for Audemars Piguet, they will be selling more than just their signature style. That shift will come from their new collection, Audemars Piguet Code 11.59. AP’s Claim to Fame As I mentioned above, Audemars Piguet is different than almost every other luxury brand. The reason being is that they really only sell one watch, the Royal Oak, which was once a polarizing piece due to its unique appearance. These days, almost nobody has a bad thing to say about it, as it is one of the most sought-after timepieces in the world. Its close sibling, the Royal Oak Offshore, is very close to be the same watch but is a bit larger. What this brand has done with essentially just one hyper-popular model has been remarkable, but all of that is changing. Audemars Piguet Code 11.59, An Ambitious Launch The Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 is not a single watch. Instead, it is an entire collection that features a chronograph, skeleton dial, tourbillon, and much more. What makes this such a courageous endeavor is that they aren’t merely testing the market with one product, then expanding the collection based on its reception. Instead, it AP is taking the riskier route and putting an incredible amount of money, work, and thought into this ambitious release. They aren’t just doing it for business reasons, either. This new collection is also about showing the watch world and themselves that they can branch out and dominate in an area that is foreign to them. Audemars Piguet Code 11.59, A Brand-New Style The reason why the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 is making so many headlines is that it is radically different than the Royal Oak and its spinoffs. Rather than being hexagonal and industrial, these pieces are round and refined. They look much more like Patek Philippe and other similar brands, rather than sticking with the distinct Audemars Piguet look of old. This is good news for watch collectors because it allows them to put an AP on their wrist even if they don’t love the appearance of the Royal Oak. The Same Top-Tier Quality AP sells some of the most expensive watches on the market. It’s mainly because they put an incredible amount of effort and craftsmanship into each product they produce. That means top-tier quality regarding the grade of materials, the polish the put on the case, the movement inside of it, and everything in between. When you buy an AP, you know you’re getting the pinnacle of horological engineering, and the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 projects to be no different. Even better, they have added some complex functions to these new pieces that were not present in the ones of old. If you love the idea of having a chronograph or tourbillon on your wrist, then you’ll be very happy with this new release. What Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Means Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 isn’t just a cool name that some marketing guru thought up. Instead, Audemars Piguet put some real thought into the meaning behind it. They have revealed the following acronym behind the name. Challenge – Go beyond just “great” and create truly incredible products. Own – Respect your history and remember where you came from. Dare – Don’t be afraid to take up a grand new goal. Evolve – Don’t fear change. 59 – The last minute before the day changes. Ultimately, the name Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 reflects what the company is doing with the collection. That is taking their history of exceptional craftsmanship and channeling it into revolutionizing the brand. Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Conclusion Audemars Piguet sent shockwaves through the watch community when they released the Royal Oak in the early 70s. While many loved it, others disliked the unique design and rejected it immediately. Nearly 50 years later, AP is still causing uproar, but this time for a different reason. It is creating timepieces that aren’t odd, and instead capture a classic aesthetic. Personally, I love the direction they are going and don’t think it is a bad thing to incorporate styles that aren’t particularly new. Considering the esteem this brand has, it is quite likely that the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 is a resounding success. No matter what, I am excited to get my hands on one of them and see the mastery that AP has come up with in this new collection!

  9. What is a Tourbillon Watch and Why are They So Expensive?

What is a Tourbillon Watch and Why are They So Expensive?

I know a tourbillon watch is one of the most expensive options on the market. But I was still shocked when I delved into a few online retailers. The most unbelievable example is the Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon Celestial Minute Repeater, which comes in at just under $2,000,000. No, that’s not a typo. Although alternate other options are more affordable, that price point shows you how sought after this complication is. But what it is? What is its purpose? And why does it drive price up so much? I’ll answer these questions and more in the sections below. What is a Tourbillon Watch? Before explaining this complication, let’s go over how mechanical watches work. In general, these pieces have an area in them that is called an escapement. It is made up of a hairspring and a balance wheel, and it makes the watch tick through rotating motion. The shortcoming of this design is that gravity sometimes affects it in an unfavorable way, and you get inconsistent timekeeping as a result. What the tourbillon does is put that escapement in a rotating cage rather than being in a fixed position. The result, in theory, is that those changes in gravity have little to no effect. If you trust that theory, these watches should keep better time than their conventional counterparts. What They Are Technically Used For? As I alluded to above, tourbillons are supposed to make watches more accurate and do so by negating the effects of uneven gravity and positioning. What is so interesting about their popularity is that in practice, the accuracy of these watches versus traditional mechanical pieces is negligible. So, why do people spend thousands of dollars to purchase them? Three Basic Variants If you’re interested in purchasing one of these pieces, you have three basic options to choose from aside from a traditional tourbillon: Flying – This variety allows you to have a better view of the complication, as it removes some pieces of material that tend to keep it out of sight. Multi Axis – While conventional tourbillons rotate in just one direction, the multi-axis variety does so in many planes. While there is no functional use to this method, it makes for a more beautiful view. Multiple – This one is simple. Some manufacturers choose to incorporate this complication multiple times in their watches, rather than just once. Again, whether this has a functional effect on timekeeping is still debatable. People instead purchase these pieces for the feat of engineering that goes into them. Why People Actually Buy Them Like many other watch complications and features, the reason that people love them is the craftsmanship involved in making them. These little devices can be incredibly hard to create, and there is nothing horology enthusiasts love more than having a complex piece of machinery on their wrists. The fans of tourbillons are really just people that respect the difficulty that goes into building these machines, not people who pay a premium for a complication that may or may not even improve a watches timekeeping ability. Why You Might Want to Purchase One Perhaps the most important question is whether you should purchase one of these watches or not. To help you choose, let’s discuss a few reasons why people love them. Craftsmanship – The tourbillon is one of the most impressive pieces of engineering that a watch manufacturer can manage. Some even call it the pinnacle of craftsmanship. If that appeals to you, buying one of these pieces might be a good idea. Aesthetics – One of the most enjoyable aspects of having this complication. As a result, you can watch it spin and work whenever you want. Clout – Lastly, there is a certain amount of clout that comes with owning one of these watches. Why You Might Not Despite the positives of tourbillons, many choose to pass on them due to the following negatives. Price – These pieces are almost always very expensive. The cheapest of them are in the low thousands, with many Swiss brands offering them for over $50,000. Unnecessary Engineering – Some view the tourbillon as entirely unnecessary and would prefer to have a simpler piece. Flashiness – These watches are usually somewhat large and often show the tourbillon on the dial. If you prefer an understated look, you may want to go in a different direction. Now that you know what a tourbillon watch is, what they do, why they are so expensive, and why you may or may not want to buy one — you can make an informed purchasing decision. One result may be passing on this complication but still knowing a bit more about the art of horology. The other is falling in love with tourbillon watches and deciding to add one to your collection. Either way, you can’t lose.

  11. Why the Tudor Heritage Black Bay is an Excellent Entry Level Watch

Why the Tudor Heritage Black Bay is an Excellent Entry Level Watch

First, let’s discuss what “entry level” means, as there is a lot of discussion about this vague term in the horological world. Some give this designation that timepieces as affordable as $500, while others will call a $10,000 masterpiece an entry level watch. In my experience, this term most often describes products in the $2,000-5,000 range. They are the beginning of the truly exquisite luxury pieces, but can be had for a reasonable amount of money. That’s why I think the Tudor Heritage Black Bay embodies this spirit perfectly and is an excellent choice for anyone looking to enter the luxury watch market! Tudor Heritage Black Bay History If you’re a watch enthusiast, there is a good chance that you’ve heard the name Hans Wilsdorf. The reason is that this visionary businessman created Rolex, which is perhaps the most famous watch brand in the world. After some time, Wilsdorf sought to make a product that could retain Rolex’s standards of quality, but come in at a lower price point. What he wanted to do was open up his craft and make it more accessible to regular people. Tudor was born out of this exact desire. The relationship that Wilsdorf provided allowed Tudor to become a powerhouse brand right away, as they had access to Rolex’s widespread appeal and technology. It wasn’t long before the US Navy began to use Tudor watches and the company started to make historical contributions to the craft of horology. What you, the consumer, need to know is that this brand has a fascinating and impressive heritage that you can be proud of. Tudor Heritage Black Bay Aesthetics The Tudor Heritage Black Bay has that quintessential dive aesthetic, but somehow separates itself from almost every other piece I’ve seen. The appeal starts with the dial, which is simple, yet exudes pure class. Next, you have the hands, which sport the signature Tudor shape. Then, there is everything else: The glossy bezel, polished case, and much more. One thing I especially like about this piece is how creative you can get with its straps and coloring. You can stick to a conventional silver bracelet and black bezel. Or branch out with a leather strap and bronze case. Whatever your style is, the Black Bay should cater to it. Craftsmanship Tudor isn’t one of those brands that sells based on name alone. Instead, they devote themselves to creating excellent timepieces that have fantastic craftsmanship. That devotion starts with the movement, which is incredibly reliable and is built in-house. It also has an impressive 200m water resistance and a general feel of quality materials. In short, you won’t get your hands on a Black Bay and think, “this feels cheap.” Instead, you’ll be shocked at how low the price is despite its exceptional quality. Tudor Heritage Black Bay Price Point As is always the case when talking about watches, the price you get will depend on what you buy and where you buy it from. Still, I can provide a range that your Black Bay will most likely fit into. As far as I can tell, every one of them is somewhere between $2,500-3,500. While this price point is unrealistic for many, it is somewhat affordable when you compare it the other Swiss brands. Ultimately, this piece is not out of reach for many of the people that are interested in joining the luxury watch culture. A Past Complaint That’s Been Resolved One issue that collectors had with the Tudor Heritage Black Bay in the past is that it used a generic movement. What this means is that Tudor would buy Swiss machinery from a bulk supplier. Then they would install it into their pieces. While they worked well, many people didn’t like how high the price was, considering that the movements were not built in-house. The good news is that this issue has been resolved. Tudor now produces their Black Bay movements themselves, making it an even more attractive piece. One Thing You Might Not Like There is one thing that you might not like about the Tudor Heritage Black Bay: Its case is a bit thick. While this issue doesn’t bother me, many people love the look and feel of a thin, sleek watch. If that describes you, it might be better to choose a different piece. Additionally, you can look into the smallest sizes of the Black Bay and see if they suit you better. Tudor Heritage Black Bay Conclusion Over time, you learn about the watch industry and that there are hundreds of fantastic options at every price point. Still, some pieces seem to grab your attention more than others. For me, that is the Tudor Heritage Black Bay – which checks all the boxes for entry-level watches. If you agree, then perhaps it is time to make the investment! Considering how wonderful the Black Bay is from top to bottom, taking that leap is something you likely won’t regret.
