Wherever you find hip-hop stars you’ll encounter some of the world’s top luxury watches. From classic gold timepieces to diamond-encrusted wonders, lets take a look at high-end watches of hip-hop stars.
Kanye West Rolls With Rolex
You’ll probably see a Rolex on the wrist of Kanye West. Kanye is often wearing a now-discontinued Submariner 16613. The two-tone stainless steel timepiece with an iridescent dial has been hard to get a hold of since its discontinuation. Unlike its replacement, the 11613 model, Kayne’s watch has slim hands, small markers, and narrow case lugs. You can also see West wearing a custom all-black Rolex Submariner and he was captured on an episode of Keeping up With the Kardashians sporting a gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date.
Pharrell Prefers Richard Mille
He’s a producer, rapper, artist, and designer — just to name a few of Pharrell‘s job descriptions! Of course, his watches are equally eclectic and he often chooses to wear an iconoclastic Richard Mille. Pharrell was seen on the Golden Globes red carpet wearing a Richard Mille RM-031, one of only ten of the futuristic timepieces that were made. With a price tag north of $50,000, the RM-031 departs from Mille’s trademark tonneau and barrel-shaped designs with a rounded case. However, it shares the same Formula One-inspired elements such as lightweight steel accents, intricate tourbillon movement, and direct-impulse escapement.
Nas and His Many Rolexes
While his lyrics have referenced a litany of luxury watches including Hublot, Panerai and Audemars Piguet, hip-hop icon Nas is a die-hard Rolex man. Over the years we’ve seen him wearing three models in the President series, including a classic yellow gold Day-Date II with a champagne dial and a vintage Day-Date with a coral dial that was all the rage in the 1970s. Nas has also been a fan of two different yellow gold Sky Dwellers and a stainless steel Submariner with a black bezel and a black dial.
DJ Khaled Does Patek Philippe
DJ Khaled goes big with just about everything, so naturally the same applies to what he wears on his wrist. You’d be well advised to put on a pair of sunglasses before looking at his diamond-studded Patek Philippe Nautilus. The Nautilus comes with a hefty price tag with its rounded octagon bezel and unique porthole case. Available in rose gold, white gold, steel, and two-tone variations, the exquisite sports watch has been a companion to active and upscale lifestyles since its debut in 1975.
Nicki Minaj Defies Convention With Rolex
Boldness has been a theme for Nicki Minaj since she entered the hip-hop scene. It’s no wonder she eschews tradition and dons a men’s classic Rolex Day-Date in the video for “Beez in the Trap.” Dubbed the President watch, the timeless model, which comes in platinum or 18-carat gold, has been a staple of style since its debut in 1956. Of course, Minaj also rotates modern timepieces and diamond-encrusted watches into her forward fashion.
Rick Ross Goes Glitzy With Audemars Piguet
What‘s “frosted gold” you ask? You can find the dazzling design on the wrist of Rick Ross. His Audemars Piguet Royal Oak has a white gold frosting finish, created by a process called the Florentine Technique, which punches small depressions into the gold to create a carpet of facets that makes the surface shimmer. The Frosted Gold version is just one of the many incarnations the Royal Oak has seen over the years since it first hit the watch scene in 1971. Ross is also an owner of a Patek Philippe Calatrava. While not cheap, you can get a classic Calatrava with a yellow gold bezel and black alligator strap for considerably less than a frosted Royal Oak.
Birdman is all About the Diamonds
If you spot Birdman chances are you can get a glimpse of his Hublot King Power Split Second Gold Pave. Actually, 248 big differences — diamonds! Beyond its overload of jewels, the King Power has an 18-carat gold case. If that’s not enough, it also has a black carbon dial with rose gold markers.
But the King Gold isn’t the most extravagant watch in Birdman’s collection. That distinction goes to his diamond-encrusted Chopard. Only two of the shockingly bejeweled timepieces were made. Elton John owns the second absurdly ostentatious watch with a dollar-sign design in diamonds. They each shelled out about 1.5 million dollars to own the extravagant pieces.
Jay-Z Breaks the Bank With Beyoncé
Step aside Elton John and Birdman, Jay-Z has got you beat when it comes to diamond-encrusted watches. His wife Beyoncé gave him one of the most-expensive Hublot has ever produced for his 43rd birthday. From a diamond face to bezel and bracelet, it has a value of around 5 million dollars. Jay-Z has given shout-outs to Hublot with lyrics on the tracks “Picasso Baby” and “Nickels and Dimes.”
But his love of luxury watches began well before his Hublot days with Beyoncé. In the 1990s, Jay-Z came to fame sporting a platinum Rolex Day-Date and over the years has amassed a collection. The collection includes Rolex Sky-Dwellers as well as models from Audemars Piguet and Jaeger-LeCoultre.
Drake Goes With Vintage Rolexes
Noted for his fashion as well as rapping, Drake has a soft spot for traditional Rolex watches. One of the more unique watches in his collection is a Rolex Oyster Quartz dating to the 1970s. But he’s most often seen wearing other classic models from the Rolex line, including a Rolex Yacht-Master II, GMT-Master II and Sky-Dweller.
How to explain the inseparable fusion of hip-hop and luxury watches? Perhaps rapper Meek Mills sums it up best in the intro to the album “Dreams and Nightmares”: “There was something bout that Rollie when it first touched my wrist…Had me feeling like that dope boy when he first touched that brick.”
