You want to make the most of your dollar, right? But sometimes things can put a little dent in your wallet. This is often the case when consumers look at diving watches from brands like Rolex, Omega, and other big names. Luckily, there are brands out there that make excellent products in lower price ranges. The most prominent of them is Seiko, a Japanese brand who has an unmatched reputation in the affordable watch space. Today, I will be discussing the Seiko Prospex Diver line – which gives you a fantastic bang for your buck! Find out why in the sections below.

There is a wide range of appearances when it comes to the Seiko Prospex Divers line. On one end, you have divers that look roughly as you’d expect, with conventional coloring and standard dial designs. On the other, you have more unique pieces, like ones with subdials and odd shapes. This wide spectrum is one of my favorite aspects of the Prospex line, as just about anyone can find a watch that works for them. One thing that you should take note of is the size of these timepieces. They generally range from around 43-51mm, so those of you who prefer smaller products might want to look elsewhere.

Seiko has gained its excellent reputation primarily through craftsmanship. A big piece of that equation is the movements that they install on the inside of their watches. The automatic Prospex divers follow this trend, with each of them having fantastic function and reliability. Power reserve isn’t everything when it comes to movements but looking at them can be very illuminating. Most of these Seiko pieces go up to 41 hours, which competes with much pricier Swiss products.

The second movement type Seiko uses in this line is solar powered quartz. The one you choose will come down to your priorities. Some of you might require an automatic piece at this price point, while others will enjoy the convenience of a solar engine.

Dive Capabilities

Some watch manufacturers call their products divers but don’t incorporate the capabilities to back that name up. Seiko is not one of them. These Prospex pieces are made from versatile stainless steel, are water resistant up to 200 or 300 meters, and have luminescent dial components that shine in low light conditions. Add all of that up, and you have a timepiece that can survive in an actual deep diving scenario.

Wear ability

I have personally worn multiple Seiko Prospex divers and can give an accurate representation of their wearability. What I found is that they are quite comfortable, moderately heavy, and generally feel great on your wrist. The one issue that you might run into is their size. I have a pretty large wrist and feel good with a 43.5mm dial, but you might not. Additionally, some of their case diameters get up into the low fifties, which will be too large for many.

Three to Check Out:

Though there are many options out there, I’ve chosen 3 for you to check out. Please note that each of them has variations, so if you love the design, you might want to see it in a variety of colors.

  • SLA021J1 – This piece is the perfect pick for those of you with conventional taste. The dial design reminds you of the classics, and the color scheme of black and silver is timeless. You can even spice it up a bit by choosing the SLA019J1, which is the same watch but with a green dial and bezel. It also has a manageable size of just over 43mm, making it a good fit for most. If you want a top tier diver but can’t shell out over $1,000 for it, this is an excellent choice.

  • SSC663P1 – This is one of the solar powered models that I addressed above. As for aesthetics, its subdials, multi-colored bezel, and classic shape give it a great look. The inside is a reliable quartz movement that recharges itself with the sun. What that means for you is that this watch will take almost no maintenance. In fact, you could spend a decade with it before needing a tune-up.
  • SRPA81K1 – Finally, we have this unique looking diver. What instantly jumps out at you is the size and shape of it. It is almost 52mm and is a perfect circle, which are two very unusual features when incorporated together. One more interesting aspect of this watch is that its case is a mix of ceramic and stainless steel, while most dive watches are just steel. You might not like the aesthetic of this piece, but it is definitely worth a look.
