The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn is a blend of the minds of Werner Aisslinger and NOMOS Glashütte designers, who have made a stunning watch for the new Neomatik caliber with a date function. With strong forms, long curves, gorgeous displays, beautiful materials, all of these things come together to create a real strong feeling of motion, with the Autobahn available in three special iterations.
The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Neomatik 41 date sports grey is the racing model of the three Autobahn versions, with blue on a gray background and neon orange hands. A unique, strong watch—with a tin bezel, special crown, and bold dial.
The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Neomatik 41 date midnight blue shows that the moon and stars are alight, as are the streetlights—and the superluminova on this watch. The elongated date window and the long curve of the dial are fresh and new. The hue of this Autobahn watch is obviously midnight blue.
Then there is the Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Neomatik 41 date. You don't require a driver's license, just look properly. The Autobahn will reveal its strong form and ingenuity with its sapphire crystal glass back: the neomatik date caliber created by hand and with a bit of high-tech. With a white silver-plated dial, this watch is more to the classic end of the NOMOS scale. Yet it still has something fresh going on.
Yesterday, today, tomorrow: the three-lane date window. Generously proportioned, unmistakable. And ideally positioned at the edge of the dial—a sign of the outstanding mechanics from Glashütte within. Namely its NOMOS caliber, designed and built in-house. Sitting with presence on the wrist, a robust case and sophisticated dial. Autobahn is an eye-catching watch with a water resistance of 100 meters. Also clear to see here: the curve of the dial and sapphire crystal glass. For long nights: Autobahn midnight blue displays the time in the dark as well—thanks to the luminous ring of large superluminova fields on its dial.
History Behind NOMOS
Even as a student at the Berlin University of the Arts, Werner Aisslinger worked for Ron Arad and Jasper Morrison in London and Michele de Lucchi in Milan. In 1993 he founded studio aisslinger in Berlin, which has had a second office in Singapore since 2008. Aisslinger’s Juli Chair was the first German chair since 1964 to be selected for the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York. His furniture designs are also on display in the Fonds national d’art contemporain in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the Neue Sammlung in Munich.
Aisslinger’s nomadic architectural units, such as the Loftcube, are pioneering works for a new style of living. Aisslinger has received numerous design prizes, such as the Compasso d’Oro from Italy, the Designpreis Deutschland from Germany, and the Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum. In 2014 he received the title of ‘A&W Designer of the year’. Since then, Werner Aisslinger has been working for and with NOMOS Glashütte, alongside his creative partner Tina Bunyaprasit.
Outstanding mechanics from Glashütte: The first neomatik caliber with a date, setting a new standard. The NOMOS automatic caliber neomatik date (DUW 6101) is not only very large—at only 3.6 millimeters in height, it is also extremely thin. That’s because this caliber was redesigned from start to finish, and the date mechanism has been integrated into it.
The result is that the new NOMOS watches with this caliber have the date where it should be—both traditionally- and aesthetically-speaking: on the edge of the dial. For timepieces with a diameter larger than 40 mm, this is unique.
Since the date ring is placed around the DUW 6101 movement, the design of these new date watches allows for the greatest degree of freedom. The resulting aesthetic is innovative, highly individual, and harmonious. The new NOMOS date is not only easily legible; depending on the exact model, it is also up to three times larger than standard date windows.
The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn is a watch with special lines, profound curves, stunning looks, plush surfaces and more. Certainly, all of these aspects meld into one another to make a strong feeling of motion, with the Autobahn coming in three unique styles.
