Cvstos Chrono: High-Performance Sports Watches

Launched in 2005, Cvstos became one of the biggest newcomers in the luxury watch industry. This is due to the identity of its founder Sassoun Sirmakes and Chief Designer Antonio Terranova. Both of these men are industry moguls who aim to fill the gap in the Swiss luxury watchmaking industry. The company seeks to apply the philosophy of modernism in timepieces through creative execution and engineering marvels.

One of the brand’s breakout collections is the Cvstos Chrono, offering cutting-edge chronograph watches that cater to sportsmen who appreciate fine Swiss watchmaking. These accurate chronographs also feature tachymeter and regatta timers, perfect for high-performance sports.

How much is a Cvstos Chrono watch?

Cvstos watches are high-end Swiss watches. These luxury timepieces feature unique and intricate designs that require a lot of time and attention. As such, the brand doesn’t release a lot of editions for its timepieces, boosting its price even higher. That said, Cvstos Chrono watches come with complications that may require more work. Watches from this collection demand about a price range of $10,000 USD up to $30,000 USD, depending on materials used, complications, and design.

Prices for the Cvstos Challenge Chrono II Series

There are a few things that Cvstos follows when designing a timepiece. People refer to it as the brand’s design tenet: preciousness and performance, efficiency and elegance. These things make up what we know as Cvstos watches. The brand’s Chronograph Challenge line exacts all these ideas into one. In 2013, they launched the Cvstos Challenge Chrono II, a streamlined version of the earlier Chronograph Challenge model. The Chronograph Challenge is the brand’s flagship timepiece and many fans of high-performance sports are geared towards this design.

Antonio Terranova designed the timepiece with a contemporary mindset. This gives the watch the ultimate modern aesthetic with a twist on classism. This timepiece comes with the similar Cvstos 577 automatic chronograph movement. It also features the Cvstos Technology tungsten 88 rotor.

What sets this timepiece apart from other Chronograph Challenge watches is its lightweight features. Cvstos’ choice of using tungsten and titanium materials on these watches make them ultimately lighter. Plus, the dials are – by far – the most rationalized of all the watches in the collection. This is because the brand wanted to make sure that all parts remain readable. The position and design of the chronograph sub-dials doesn’t take away from the intricate details seen through its skeletonized design. With that said, you can expect thick indexes in this watch as well as striking SuperLuminova for better optics.

The first Chronograph Challenge watches have Arabic numerals which are great for readability. However, this takes away from the tachymeter that makes the timepiece a sporty piece. So, to solve that, Cvstos took away the Arabic numerals so the focus funnels into the chronograph counters and tachymetric inner bezel. The date counter sits at 3 o’clock with a power reserve indicator accentuated by matching colors.

Speaking of colors, this timepiece comes in different color iterations and designs that make them stylish and modish. You can avail of the Cvstos Challenge Chrono II in either steel, black steel or in titanium with pink 5N gold lateral elements.

For such an impressive timepiece, you might be wondering, “How much is the Cvstos Challenge Chrono II?” You can expect to dish out about $18,000 USD to $30,000 USD in retail. This widely depends on the materials used on the watch. That said, the gold iteration of the watch costs the most at $30,000 USD and steel costs the least at $18,000 USD. The great thing is that you can find these timepieces in the second-hand market for a lot less.

However, do expect that gold timepieces increase value over time. This makes gold Challenge Chrono II models a good investment piece. Even better, you can purchase limited edition Challenge Chrono II watches for less than their retail price today which is around $18,000 USD to $ 26,000 USD. Many limited-edition timepieces appreciate overtime.

Prices for the Cvstos Challenge III Chronograph-S Series

Known for its revolutionary designs, Cvstos continues to change up the Chronograph Challenge line with this watch. The Cvstos Challenge III Chronograph-S is the successor of the Challenge Chrono II watches. From more refined designs, Cvstos took sporty elegance to the next level with the Challenge III Chronograph-S. Yet another timeless offering, this watch is a lot sportier and for all the right reasons.

At the heart of the watch remains the CVSTOS-577 automatic movement but with a new bimetallic rotor. The new rotor – now a lot more lightweight – consists of Tungsten 88 & Titanium Grade 5. Cvstos also updated its infamous ‘S’ or Sport line. This is by incorporating a small seconds hand with three branches and a new power reserve display read through a counter. It also now comes with two charge indicators so you can easily gauge the power of your timepiece.

The great thing about this timepiece is that it kept the ergonomic readability of the Chronograph Challenge line. It’s visible in the dark as it is in the day despite its very busy dial. Compared to its predecessor, however, this timepiece comes a lot lighter with no steel components to list. The container, caseback, as well as crown and pushers of the watch come in Titanium Grade 5. Similarly, the protector of the crown and pushers have the same material. Meanwhile, the Brancards (vertical sidebars) can either be in titanium, 5N gold, or ITR2 ceramic composite material. These key details make the Challenge III Chronograph-S truly featherweight.

This timepiece feels as powerful as it looks with clean lines. It’s also very stylish with different colors available that will definitely suit your preference. You can avail it white, black, red as well as different shades of blue. Paired with an NBR® (rubber) strap, you’re sure to enjoy this timepiece whether you’re into high-performance sports or not.

All the watches from this collection come in Titanium with some models using Pink Gold 5N. This greatly varies the prices of Challenge III Chronograph-S models. At $19,000 USD, you can purchase a titanium model with no gold element. However, if you feel like splurging, you can always get the combination of both for $30,000 USD. If that doesn’t suffice just yet, you can always look at pre-owned models for much less cost.

Prices for the Cvstos Sealiner Regata Series

The Cvstos Sealiner Regata is exactly what you think it is – a timepiece made especially for regattas. Regatta is a type of water sport where two boats go against each other. Such an event happens in a closed circuit surrounded by buoys. Each boat must navigate around these buoys, according to the direction defined by a deciding committee.

The regatta has become popular due to the America’s Cup. Soon after, this became the sport of the elite. Such a challenging sport requires a timepiece to time the course perfectly – from launch to every move and pivot. That’s why most luxury watch manufacturers launched their own regatta watches. Cvstos took part in the market with the Sealiner Regatta, a chronograph made especially for this.

Cvstos developed a chronograph with this sport in mind. At 12 o’clock, it’s noticeable that you get a regatta timer with this watch. Aside from the hour and minute functions of the watch, the chronograph features a 5-minute, 10-minute, and 15-minute countdown indicator. These are all relevant to the sport, making this the ultimate timepiece for such an event. Moreover, it features a power reserve indicator that would make it easy for you to know when your timepiece needs winding.

This timepiece, just like other Cvstos Chrono watches, come in different colors to match your style. You can get it in very nautical colors with its Bicolor red gold 5N case. Moreover, the Cvstos 577 comes with blue plasma treatment for a more pleasing aesthetic.

With its special functions, the Cvstos Sealiner Regata is typically priced at $29,000 USD on retail. However, if you purchase it on the second-hand market, you can get it for a few thousand less. If you prefer something a little more fancy without the regatta timer, you can opt for the Sealiner Chrono YC Portofino. YC stands for Yacht Club and this timepiece is only limited to 50 editions. That said, it costs a tad less at $21,000 USD. Pre-owned models cost a little less but it’s a true collector’s item you would want to keep for the future.

History Behind the Cvstos Chrono Collection

Perhaps, it’s in the blood of Cvstos founder Sassoun Sirmakes to make luxury timepieces. His father, Vartan Sirmakes, is the co-owner of the Franck Muller Watchland Group. At 17, he took over the family's jewel-setting workshop by mastering the craft of watchmaking. When he turned 20 in 2004, he collaborated with Antonio Terranova. At the time, Terranova had already worked with storied brands such as Cartier, Piaget, TAG Heuer, Breitling and Zenith.

This collaboration resulted in the creation of the Cvstos Chrono line, offering timepieces with chronograph functions that carry contemporary designs. These chronographs come in handy especially for those who participate in high-performance sports. That’s why the company’s patrons include well-known sports legends, such as Dani Pedrosa, a Spanish motorcycle racer.
