Baume et Mercier Clifton Club: An Entry-Level Watch for the ‘Gentlesportsmen’

The Baume et Mercier Clifton Club is an entry-level mechanical watch well-positioned for the younger and active ‘gentlesportsmen’ who like to wear a well-designed everyday watch. It offers a competitive line of sports watches, stylish at the maximum, with designs of impressive wearability. Gearing towards a casual watch, rather than an actual dive watch, the movement that powers each model is neither as strong power-horse as you would expect, nor with as much power reserve as the Clifton Baumatic, but is more than what you need. The Clifton Club collection is a well-balanced combination of the manufacturing codes of Baume et Mercier — satin and polished finishes, curved lugs, classic dial colors, linked bracelets, among others. But also quite discernable is its playful attitude with the addition of orange and blue accents, fun-styled hands, unidirectional bezels, and crown guards. More than anything, it is designed and tested to stand up to extreme pressure — truly an ideal watch for the most active lifestyle.

Vintage Baume et Mercier Clifton Club — Is it a good investment?

Design and value are technically what make a watch more valuable over time. Brands with higher resale prices tend to gain a higher price primarily because of their mason’s reputation, with the exceptional condition of the watch only coming second. But when coupled with watches that are limited edition, and with the partnership with other associations, instantly makes the watch even more desirable.

You can best bet that the Baume et Mercier Clifton Club Indian Legend Tribute Chief and Scout Chronograph watches with openworked Valjoux 7750-powered movements are desirable not just among Baume et Mercier buying community but also Indian Motorcycles fans. Another limited-edition watch from the same partnership is the Clifton Club Burt Munro Tribute. Burt Munro is famous for having an AMA national land-speed record riding the 1920s Indian Motorcycle Scout.

Baume et Mercier Clifton Club's History and Design Details

For the last decade, Baume et Mercier has been known to almost exclusively manufacture dress watches and vintage-inspired pieces. Though part of the same Richemont Group such as A. Lange and Sohne, Jaeger LeCoultre, and Panerai, it only comes second to these bigger brands. However, the brand seems to garner its strength in the market by attracting new clients not just to the brand but also to the world of fine watchmaking. Specifically, by launching the Clifton Club watches in 2013, featuring the entry-level watches with a fun and fresh vibe clearly targeted to the young clientele.

The Clifton Club Collection offered in its lineup several varieties and styles that even non-collectors would be interested in. At first glimpse, we’d see a bit of resemblance with historic dive watches in the 1960s. But apart from the same 42mm case sizes and rotating bezel, the rest is unique to the collection. Signature to the Clifton Club collection is its orange and blue accents, which work as pops of color on top of an otherwise straightforward dial. Just above the Geneva signature, a large greek letter Phi logo is used to represent the 12 o’clock. The rest of the hour markers are represented with riveted indexes. The white luminous hour and minute hands take on the same design all throughout the collection with the exception of Ref. 10410, but we would see the seconds’ hands being a bit more playful with again the orange and blue accents.

Reasons to buy a Baume et Mercier Clifton Club watch

Although Baume et Mercier is famous for chronograph watches and other complications, it was able to enter seamlessly into the territory of sports watches with the Clifton Club Collection. It is an interesting move away from Baume et Mercier’s usual design codes, which were typically bought as gifts.

Instead, it has clearly defined a different market as a new collector’s watch for the active person — one to buy for yourself to celebrate another adventurous milestone, or when you’re new into fine watches but don’t know the best pick out of all the massive options. Best to start with a great stylish dive watch that you can use everyday.

The Clifton Club is as simple as you can get in terms of functions, but to look for a better styled watch than this would be futile. The steel case, even at a large 42mm size, is perfect for any wrist due to its curved lugs that would make it feel adjustive even to smaller wrists. For an everyday watch, it is definitely a playful, fresh, and fun choice of a wristwatch.
