Ball Fireman: Railroad Watches with a Modern Twist

The invention of trains and railroad systems changed the course of human history, as it marked a shift in the world to a more advanced era. In this new era, precise timekeeping proved to be a determining factor in ensuring safety and timeliness with every voyage. Webb C. Ball, the founder of the Ball Watch Company, was appointed as the Chief Time Inspector to ensure the American railroads would run on a functional schedule. As such, the Ball Fireman watch collection is a commemoration of the brand’s association with the American railroad system and the significant role the brand played in railroad history. The Ball Fireman watch collection is the brand’s modern, luxury take on the old standard railroad watch.

How Much is a Ball Fireman Watch?

The Ball Watch Company probably has one of the richest histories in the watch industry. One of the main reasons for this, as mentioned before, is its role in implementing time zones and accurate timekeepers for a smooth railroad system in America. Over time, the brand expanded from manufacturing functional but simple railroad watches, pushing forward in their horological innovation to develop a diverse range of high-performing luxury timepieces. One of these is the Ball Fireman collection, which brings forth the humble practicality of a railroad watch with a modern, luxury twist. All of the watches in the Ball Fireman collection are equipped with the high-performance BALL RR1103 movement. It is an automatic calibre movement that allows each Ball Fireman watch to last for approximately 48 hours without winding.

Here are a few of the more notable models in the Fireman collection along with their approximate prices.

Ball Fireman Classic

The Ball Fireman Classic is as vintage as can be. When the Fireman Classic was first launched, many fans noticed that it had shared a few similarities with some other old-school luxury watches in the market. This does not necessarily mean that these brands were copying from each other. In fact, many vintage-style watches resemble each other simply because they follow the blueprints laid down by their predecessors’, especially since the designs of watches back in the day were not that sophisticated. The Ball Fireman Classic Ref. NM2098C-SJ-BK is an example of a modern-day timepiece that has made sure to stay true to its roots and maintain a close resemblance to the railroad watch that inspired it.

The NM2098-SJ-BK comes with a classic jet-black dial, but for those who prefer a lighter aesthetic, you could also check out the Ball Fireman Classic Ref. NM2098C-SJ-WH, which showcases a white dial. The dials of both variants offer a minimalistic layout while providing a hint of luxury in the design. It features silver hands and applied indices that have thin, pointed ends. Both the metallic black dial and the clean silver dial perfectly complement the silver hour and minute markings that add more to the watch’s overall polished look. The date aperture is located at 3 o’clock, replacing the corresponding marker. The dial design is just about as simple as it gets, yet it still manages to create a stunning style with its uncluttered and smooth appearance.

Enclosed in a sturdy 40mm stainless steel case, this Fireman Classic timepiece shows off robust functionalities in contrast to its simpler dial features. It has a 5000Gs shock resistance threshold, making the Fireman Classic a durable watch able to withstand hard knocks and impacts. It can also be used for casual diving or swims with its handy 100m water resistance. It also has 14 luminous micro gas tubes on both the markers and hands set to provide greater visibility in the dark. Without a doubt, the Fireman Classic is a good-looking dress watch that offers enough flexibility to be well-suited to almost any occasion.

Both variants of this Ball Fireman Classic watch have a listed price of $1,499 USD each. Take note that the prices may vary from time to time; nevertheless, it is still quite an affordable luxury watch that offers a classic railroad watch design.

Ball Fireman Victory

The Ball Fireman Victory NM2098C-S5J-BK is another stellar entry in the Fireman collection. The most fun thing about this timepiece is that it features a wide variety of dial patterns and colors to choose from. There are three main colors for the dial of this watch: black, silver, and blue. Aside from that, this model also offers three different dial patterns to choose from: the Clous de Paris, which features a smart and snappy waffle-pattern, Engine-Turned, which shows off an unusual sunken dial center with an elevated rim, and the Sunburst, which has a striking sunburst finish. You can mix and match the color and pattern of the dial so that it is a perfect fit for your preferences.

Despite the many dial choices, the indicators remain the same no matter which design is picked. It features the same thin hours, minutes, and sweep seconds indicators that are very common in the Fireman collection. The hands and the applied indices are in silver, as it blends well with the various colors available for the dial. Unlike the Fireman Classic, the indices of the Fireman Victory do not have pointed tips. Instead, the indices are rectangular in shape and are fitted with the 14 included micro gas tubes to improve readability at night. The date aperture of the Fireman Victory is located between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock without replacing said markers. The Fireman Victory also has a 40mm stainless steel case that provides durability and a professional style, and offers 100m water resistance.

The price for the Fireman Victory watch starts at $1,754 USD for each variant. It is a bit cheaper than the Fireman Classic, but rest assured that it offers the same capabilities a Fireman watch should have.

Ball Fireman Racer

The Ball Fireman Racer is by far one of the most popular watch models out of the whole collection. The Ball Fireman Racer has two variations: Ball Fireman Race Ref. NM2088C-S2J-WHBK and the Ball Fireman Racer Ref. NM2088C-S2J-BKRD. These variations offer dial color combinations which are either black with striking red indices or white with contrasting black indices. The Ball Fireman Racer Ref. NM2088C-S2J-BKRD, with its louder, more aggressive red-and-black color scheme, is sportier and fits better into the racing theme than the white variant. On the other hand, the Ball Fireman Racer Ref. NM2088C-S2J-WHBK, with its more traditional colors, features a more formal, professional look. The indicators of both variants are all in silver, except for the 3, 6, 9, and 12 numerals that are in a different color depending on the variant in question (red or black). There are also seconds markers on the outer rim of the dial along with the minute markers. You can tell just by a look that this sportier timepiece deviates more from the usual blueprint of the Fireman collection, which is one of the reasons for its popularity.

A 40mm stainless steel case is used for this watch. Offering the same features as that of its fellow Fireman watches, the Ball Fireman Racer exhibits a rough-looking surface that provides durability and a design that exudes swagger.

The retail price of the Ball Fireman Racer watch is currently $1,988 USD. That said, the Fireman Racer is a handsome and functional timepiece that is easily worth more than its listed value.

Ball Fireman Night Train DLC

The Ball Fireman Night Train DLC Ref. NM2092C-P-BK offers a fresh look that utilizes the DLC coating as its main selling point. This watch is an all-black model with gold-toned hour markings to add a splash of color. The sleek black dial is covered with the aforementioned gold-tone markers and thick gold hands as a means to provide a clearer reading of time. Both the markers and hands are equipped with 75 micro gas tubes that make it easier for the wearer to tell the time, especially in the dark. The date aperture can be found at the 3 o’clock position but is smaller and more compact in size, unlike most Fireman watches.

The 45mm case of the Night Train DLC is made from DLC-coated stainless steel. It may not have the same shine as regular stainless steel, but the DLC coating provides a new level of smoothness and hardiness that perfectly complements the structure of the Fireman Night Train DLC watch. Plus, it still has the same hardiness as that of a regular stainless steel case. This watch is paired with a black rubber strap with a standard buckle to better match its dark profile.

The price of the Ball Fireman Night Train DLC starts at $2,099 USD. It is the most expensive watch in the whole Fireman collection, but the stand-out features and unusual design justifies the price.

Ball Fireman Enterprise

Another well-known Fireman watch is the Fireman Enterprise NM2188C-S20J-WH. This watch is reminiscent of the Fireman Classic with only a few differences in the dial and indicators. The Fireman Enterprise’s dial comes in either black or white, and both dial variants are paired with silver hands and markings. The applied indices are longer than those of the Fireman Classic; plus, there are no pointed tips. The date aperture is also found at the 3 o’clock position, next to the corresponding shortened hour marking. This timekeeper has a 40mm stainless steel case that possesses the same durability and shine found on the other Ball Fireman models.

The Ball Fireman Enterprise retails at $979 USD. It is the most affordable one out of the bunch, which makes it a great choice for a beginner watch, and it is also well-suited for being used as an everyday watch.

Ball Fireman’s History and Design Details

As previously mentioned, the Ball Watch Company was deeply involved in American railroad history. Webb C. Ball was appointed by railroad companies as the Chief Time Inspector to oversee the scheduling operations of said industry. This decision was made due to the occurrence of many fatal accidents that were caused by miscommunication and improper time management, the most famous incident being the Great Kipton Trainwreck in 1891 that involved two trains crashing into one another. This was caused by a time discrepancy and misunderstanding from the engineers and conductors. This led the officials to enlist the help of Ball to investigate and determine the underlying problems with the railroad schedules. With his help, official time zones and standard railroad times were established by the railroad companies to avoid further accidents involving trains.

The Fireman collection is a testament to the rich heritage of the Ball Watch Company and its decades of experience in the watchmaking industry. Introduced in 2013, the Fireman collection is a twist on the classic railroad watch, reimagined to keep up with the advanced, modern 21st century.
